I deleted my food delivery apps last month. Not because they weren't working—quite the opposite. They were working too well.


It started innocently enough. The app learned I usually order Thai food on Fridays, so it began sending perfectly timed notifications just as I was wrapping up work. It knew I preferred medium spice, extra vegetables, no cilantro. It even figured out that I was more likely to add dessert if I'd had a stressful day (apparently my ordering patterns on days with back-to-back meetings were that predictable).


One evening, I opened the app to find my usual order already in the cart, from my favorite restaurant, with an estimated delivery time that would coincide perfectly with the end of my favorite show. All I had to do was tap "confirm."


That's when it hit me: I hadn't actually decided to order food. The decision had been made for me, by an algorithm that knew my habits better than I did.


This is the bargain we're making with AI, often without realizing it. We're trading our data, our patterns, and increasingly, our autonomy, for unprecedented convenience. And most of the time, it feels like a pretty good deal.


After all, who doesn't want their music app to create the perfect playlist for their morning run? Who wouldn't appreciate their email automatically sorting out the important messages from the noise? When AI saves us time and mental energy on mundane decisions, we can focus on what really matters, right?


But here's what I've been thinking about: what happens when we outsource too many of our small decisions?


Every choice we make, no matter how minor, is a tiny exercise in being human. When I decide what to eat for dinner, I'm not just filling my stomach. I'm considering my health, my budget, my mood, maybe even my plans to try that new recipe I bookmarked. When an algorithm makes that choice for me, optimized for convenience and corporate profit, something subtle is lost.


The tech companies know this, of course. They have teams of neuroscientists and behavioral psychologists working to make their AI systems not just helpful, but irresistible. They call it "reducing friction," but what they're really doing is creating digital grooves that our lives slide into, paths of least resistance that become harder to step out of over time.


I noticed this with my reading habits. My e-reader's AI recommendations were spot-on—it knew I loved mystery novels with strong female protagonists and would surface new releases that fit perfectly. But gradually, my reading became narrower. The algorithm wasn't going to recommend that challenging philosophy book or that poetry collection that might expand my thinking. It was optimized to give me more of what I already liked, creating an echo chamber of my own preferences.


The same thing happens with social media feeds, news aggregators, even dating apps. AI doesn't just predict what we want—it shapes what we want by controlling what we see. We think we're making free choices, but we're often just selecting from a menu that's been carefully curated to keep us engaged.


This isn't an argument against using AI. I'm writing this on a computer with spell-check, after all, and I'll probably use AI-powered tools to help edit it. The point isn't to reject these technologies but to use them consciously.


Here's what I've started doing: I've designated "friction days." Once a week, I make all my decisions manually. I browse recipes instead of ordering takeout. I pick music albums instead of hitting shuffle. I read a physical newspaper instead of my personalized news feed. It's less efficient, sure, but it reminds me what it feels like to actively choose rather than passively accept.


I've also started paying attention to the moments when AI is making decisions for me. When a notification pops up, I ask myself: did I want this information right now, or is the app trying to pull me in? When a recommendation appears, I consider: is this expanding my horizons or keeping me in my comfort zone?


The future we're building with AI is full of promise. It can free us from drudgery, help us discover things we'd never find on our own, and solve problems we can't tackle alone. But we need to be intentional about which parts of our humanity we're willing to delegate and which parts we need to keep for ourselves.


Because here's the thing: the most profound human experiences often come from the unexpected, the inefficient, the serendipitous. They come from taking the wrong turn and discovering a hidden café, from picking up a book that doesn't match our usual taste and finding it changes our perspective, from having to figure things out for ourselves and growing in the process.


AI can predict what will make us comfortable, but it can't predict what will make us grow. It can optimize for our past preferences, but it can't imagine who we might become.


So yes, I reinstalled some of those apps. But now I use them as tools, not autopilots. I let AI help me when I'm genuinely busy or need assistance, but I make sure I'm still the one driving my life.


The real challenge of our AI age isn't technical—it's philosophical. It's not about what AI can do, but about what we should let it do. It's about remembering that convenience isn't always the highest value, that efficiency isn't always the goal, and that the friction we're so eager to eliminate might actually be what makes us human.


The future isn't about choosing between AI and authenticity. It's about finding the balance that lets us use these powerful tools while still being the authors of our own lives.


And that's a choice no algorithm can make for us.
